FREDERICK DOUGLAS PATTERSON ~ AUTO ~

$50.00

The first African American to build motorized cars, Frederick Douglas Patterson carried forward the legacy of his father, Charles Richard Patterson, who founded C.R. Patterson & Sons in Greenfield, Ohio.  The company began producing high‑quality carriages in 1865, and under Frederick’s leadership, shifted into the automobile industry.

On September 23, 1915, the first Patterson‑Greenfield automobile rolled off the line.  It sold for $850, featured a 40‑horsepower Continental engine, and reached speeds up to 50 mph — a higher‑quality car than Ford’s Model T.

From 1915 to 1920, the company produced about 150 vehicles, including a two‑door roadster and a four‑door touring car, proudly marketed with the slogan: “If it’s a Patterson, it’s a good one.”  When capital ran short, Patterson transitioned the business to buses and trucks, renaming it the Greenfield Bus Body Company.  In 1939, the company closed after 74 years of craftsmanship and innovation.
