Dr. Patricia Bath ~ Laser Focus ~
A pioneering physician, inventor, and advocate whose work transformed global eye care. Following her early passion for science, she became the first Black person to train in ophthalmology at Columbia University in 1969 and quickly emerged as a leader in expanding access to vision care.
In 1976, she co‑founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, declaring that “eyesight is a basic human right.” She also pioneered community ophthalmology, bringing screenings, treatment, and education to underserved communities in the U.S. and abroad.
A decade later, Dr. Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device that made cataract surgery safer and more precise. When she patented it in 1988, she became the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent. Her invention restored sight to patients who had been blind for decades and improved cataract treatment worldwide.
In 2022, she became one of the first Black women inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, honoring a legacy defined by innovation, equity, and vision. SALUTE!!!
