Born in 1943 in Maryland, grew up deeply curious about technology. Even without encouragement in her all‑girls high school, she pushed forward and became one of only two women majoring in physics at Morgan State University—opening the door to a career at NASA as a mathematical/data analyst.
At NASA, Valerie helped develop the image‑processing systems for Landsat, the first satellite to capture multispectral images of Earth. In 1976, she saw an exhibit using concave mirrors to create a floating “real” image, inspiring her to explore how such images could be transmitted. Her experiments led to her 1980 patent for the illusion transmitter, a device that projects realistic, three‑dimensional images using concave mirrors on both ends. NASA still uses the technology, and researchers are exploring its potential for medical imaging and future video displays.
Valerie went on to manage major NASA projects, contribute to research on Halley’s Comet, the ozone hole, and a supernova, and earn multiple NASA awards. She continues to mentor young students through STEM organizations, inspiring future innovators. SALUTE!!!
