A self‑taught genius, Benjamin Banneker was an astronomer, mathematician, surveyor, inventor, and abolitionist. In 1789, he accurately predicted a solar eclipse, out‑calculating established mathematicians. From 1792–1797, he published almanacs with astronomical data, tide tables, and anti‑slavery essays — making him the first Black American to publish a scientific book.
His expertise earned him a job in surveying Washington, D.C., where he famously recalled key plans from memory after the chief surveyor left. He also challenged Thomas Jefferson on slavery and even built America’s first wooden clock entirely by hand. Banneker was a mind far ahead of its time — and a legacy that still inspires. SALUTE!!!
