Marjorie Stewart Joyner ~ Wavy ~

A trailblazing inventor and beauty industry leader best known for creating the permanent wave machine, a device that transformed hair styling. As the demand for Marcel waves and short bobs grew in the 1920s, Joyner trained with Madam C. J. Walker and eventually became vice president and national supervisor for 200 Walker beauty schools. In 1928, inspired by the rods used to cook a pot roast, Marjorie patented a machine that could set multiple curls at once—an innovation that became an instant hit.

Marjorie held two U.S. patents and believed her story showed that anyone could innovate. Beyond her inventions, she was a strong advocate for civil rights and education, helped write Illinois’ first cosmetology laws, co‑founded the National Council of Negro Women, and created organizations to support Black beauty professionals nationwide.

Her legacy lives on in the beauty industry she helped shape and the opportunities she created for generations to come. SALUTE!!!
