A pioneering African American sculptor, teacher, and champion for Black artists, who moved to Harlem in 1921 and excelled at Cooper Union, finishing the four‑year program in three. Augusta’s acclaimed busts of W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey built her reputation, however, her 1929 sculpture Gamin earned her a scholarship to study in Paris—an opportunity she was once denied due to racism, fueling her lifelong fight for equal rights in the arts.
After returning from France, Augusta exhibited and created busts of major Black cultural figures. In 1932 she founded the Savage School of Arts, New York’s largest free art program, teaching future leaders like Jacob Lawrence and Kenneth B. Clark. In 1934 she became the first African American woman elected to the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors and later led the Harlem Artists Guild.
A key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Savage opened doors for generations of Black artists. SALUTE!!!
