Maggie Lena Walker ~ Fortune ~

$60.00

The first Black woman in the U.S. to organize and run a bank in Richmond, Virginia, the former capital of the Confederacy.

After joining the Independent Order of Saint Luke (IOSL) as a teen, she rose to national leader in 1899, taking over an organization near bankruptcy. Under her direction, the IOSL grew from 1,080 members to more than 100,000 by the mid‑1920s.

Through the IOSL, Walker founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, The Saint Luke Herald, and the St. Luke Emporium. These ventures created professional jobs for Black women as accountants, stenographers, journalists, and secretaries, which were rare opportunities in the Jim Crow South.

By the mid‑1920s, the bank held half a million dollars in deposits (over $7 million today). During the Great Depression, she helped merge Richmond’s three Black‑owned banks into Consolidated Bank and Trust, serving as board chair until her death. She believed in collective giving: “The combining of the mites will produce the much.” SALUTE!!!

Fortune is a handcrafted piece of jewelry made with 10mm Amethyst, Brown Tiger Eye, Carnelian, Citrine, Green Aventurine, Malachite, and Pyrite gemstones with Green Pave accents.

The perfect piece to complement any outfit.
