Bridget "Biddy" Mason ~ Evolution ~

$50.00

Bridget “Biddy” Mason was a nurse, midwife, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who rose from slavery to become one of the first Black women to own land in Los Angeles. Born enslaved in Georgia, she was forced west during the Mormon migration and brought illegally into California, a free state.  In 1856, she petitioned a Los Angeles court for her freedom—and won—securing liberty for herself and her family in a landmark ruling.

After settling in Los Angeles, Mason built a respected career as a nurse and midwife, and became known for her herbal medicine skills and care for the poor.  Through careful saving, she purchased property on Spring Street and became a successful real estate owner as the city grew.  She used her wealth to support the community, founding a daycare, a school for Black children, and helping establish the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in her home in 1872.

Remembered as “Auntie Mason” for her generosity, Biddy fed and sheltered those in need, visited prisoners, and became a central figure in early Black Los Angeles.  Her legacy lives on through Biddy Mason Park in downtown Los Angeles and recognition in the California Social Work Hall of Distinction. Bronzite is often referred to as the "Stone of Curiosity" because it is believed to provide clarity and certainty of one's actions.

Natural River Stone is believed to access your innermost will and initiative. Although the stone itself does not cause the change, it helps one recognize and accept change.

Turquoise is believed to provide healing in relationships by showing one how to let go of pain, anger, bitterness, and resentment. It is also said to offer comfort and solace for the spirit as well as support for the physical body.
