Sarah Rector ~ Black Gold ~
Born in 1902 in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) to a Black family listed as Creek Freedmen, which entitled her to a land allotment under the Treaty of 1866. Her 159‑acre parcel was considered poor farmland—until an oil driller struck a major gusher in 1913, and at just 11 years old, Sarah began earning thousands of dollars a month, quickly becoming known nationwide as “The Richest Black Girl in America.”
Because Oklahoma law required wealthy Native and Black children to have white guardians, control of her estate was taken from her parents and given to a local white man. Reports of mismanagement drew national attention, prompting Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, and the NAACP to intervene. Sarah was later enrolled at Tuskegee Institute for protection and education.
By 18, Sarah was a millionaire with investments, land, businesses, and property. She later moved with her family to Kansas City, where she lived a comfortable life, hosted prominent musicians, and enjoyed the success her oil wealth had created. Though she lost much of her fortune during the Great Depression, she remained financially secure until her death. SALUTE!!!
